The Alternative Federal Budget starts from a set of social justice values - human dignity and freedom, fairness, equality, environmental sustainability, and the public good - embraced by representatives of a broad spectrum of civil society organizations: labour, environment, anti- poverty, faith-based, students, teachers, education, health care, cultural, social development, agriculture, child development, women, international cooperation and development, disability, Aboriginal, think tanks, etc.

The Alternative Federal Budget is a "what if" exercise: what a government could do if it were truly committed to an economic, social, and environmental agenda that reflects the values of the large majority of Canadians. It demonstrates in a concrete and compelling way that another world really is possible.

Producing Results in Prior Learning: Final Report from the Gateways Project

The Pan-Canadian Gateways project researched the validity of Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) as a method of assessment to respond effectively to demands from employers, educators, policy makers, and citizens in rural, remote and urban settings to receive recognition of learning from any source.

Learning can come from formal education, as well as from experience, from employment, and from revisiting values, skills, and knowledge gained previously. The recognition of learning from experience can fill gaps in knowledge and skills for adults who seek to further their education and advance their careers. Program PLAR has provided a reliable method and a rigorous process for meeting this need.

Some key findings:

The average award represents the equivalent of a year of full-time study for each participant.
Learners saved on average the equivalent of four and one- third years of part-time study, cutting in half the time to degree completion.
Many participants would not have returned to education without having had their prior learning recognized.
Large, untapped adult student populations exist that will not be reached through traditional delivery methods.

Community Based Research (CBR) is increasingly being recognized as important in yielding concrete knowledge and understanding that can guide policies and programmes to reduce health and social disparities. There is a growing movement of Canadians engaged in CBR. We conducted a web based survey of community and university CBR practitioners to learn more about the context and efficacy of CBR in Canada.

We learned that Canadian CBR practitioners are actively engaged in research across a broad range of health and social issues. Given relatively modest budgets, they are extremely productive. Community Based Researchers are producing new and important knowledge that is being recognized and disseminated in the published literature and through conference presentations. In addition, their efforts have contributed to lasting impacts through program and policy changes.

This booklet is intended to provide some ‘basic answers to basic questions' that our lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) members are routinely asked, as well as responses to questions that aren't asked, but perhaps our allies would like some answers to. Contents include definitions of terms used in the LGBT community, information about basic bargaining and workplace issues, suggestions for allies, and basic responses to questions about same-sex marriage, trans issues, LGBT families, etc.
