Dr. Roth has researched and/or written about a variety of topics related to the sociology of work and industrial sociology, including: working-class consciousness, trade union education, Canadian class structure, the Canadian automotive industry, workers’ tacit /informal knowledge, workplace health and safety, labour legislation and the linkages between education and the workplace.

Reuben Roth is author and co-author of several recent book chapters and journal articles, including:

“Public Perspectives on Schooling: An Overview and Analysis of Public Opinion Polling on Education.” Background Report for Leithwood, Kenneth, Michael Fullan, et al. The Schools We Need. Toronto: OISE/UT. 2003.

(Co-authored with D.W. Livingstone) “Workers’ Knowledge: An Untapped Resource in the Labour Movement.” in Verma, A. and T. Kochan (eds.). Unions in the 21st Century: An International Perspective. London: Palgrave Macmillan. 2004.

(D.W. Livingstone and Reuben Roth) “Auto Workers: Lean Manufacturing and Rich Learning” in Livingstone, D. and Peter H. Sawchuk (eds.). Workers’ Hidden Knowledge: Case Studies of Lifelong Learning in the Information Age. NY: Roman and Littlefield. 2004.

Professor Roth’s current research interests focus on working-class identity and oppositional working-class consciousness among auto assemblers. His doctoral dissertation, “Oshawa Autoworkers: Social Integration and Oppositional Class-Consciousness Among the Unionized Workers of General Motors” identified the extent and character of class consciousness, identity and imagery among Oshawa-based autoworkers. Professor Roth hopes to extend this research to Sudbury’s mining community in a future comparative study.

Professor Roth has taught sociology at Trent University since 2001. He has been a Senior Research Officer for the Centre for the Study of Education and Work (CSEW) at OISE/UT (1995-2002), a Researcher and Project Manager for the Centre for Research in Work and Society (CRWS) at York University (2002-04), a speechwriter at Queen’s Park (1994-1995) and a former General Motors assembler (1984-1991).
